Santa Fe Drive:
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

October 12, 2025 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Looking east at the Class IV, separated bike way that is part of the Santa Fe Drive Corridor Improvement Project (Western Phase) in Encinitas, California

Walk with Tom Bertulis, Traffic Engineer, to get a comprehensive understanding of the design attributes and issues with the Santa Fe Drive Corridor Improvements (Western Phase) project.

We will walk through the entire Western Phase project, spanning from Nardo Road/MacKinnon Avenue to Windsor Road/Bonita Drive. Elements that we will discuss:

  • Separated bikeways
  • Diagonal head-out parking
  • Lane width
  • Pedestrian crosswalk and island
  • Landscaping beds
  • Bus stop
  • Protected intersections (Proposed, but not implemented)

We will meet on the corner of Santa Fe Dr. and Nardo Dr. at the San Dieguito Academy (SDA) sign. The tour will take approximately 1-1.5 hours. Please bring your own snacks, water, and sunscreen. Ironically, there are no formal bike facilities at the meetup spot. Bikes can be locked up at the high school.
