SUMMARY:Advocate for Safer Streets with Senator Catherine S. Blakespear and Other Local Leaders on Saturday\, 8/23
DESCRIPTION:Letter from the office of State Senator Catherine S. Blakespear – \nBackground & Context: \nSanta Fe Drive’s “western phase” project was recently concluded\, bringing a half a mile of safer streets\, protected bike lanes\, improved walkways\, and traffic calming infrastructure that benefit hundreds of students and families commuting to San Dieguito Academy\, in addition to the countless community members using this thoroughfare. These changes\, made possible through years of community planning and millions in federal\, state and local dollars\, are already improving safer commutes\, undoubtedly saving lives and encouraging safer\, more sustainable ways to get around. \n  \nHowever\, the project has faced vocal opposition from some residents and the City Council is considering making modifications to the project – including the removal or scaling back of essential safety features. Removing these features will threaten the safety and access of young people\, families\, and active transportation users. This is unacceptable and we need your help. \n  \nPress Conference Details: \nDate: Saturday\, August 23 \nTime & Location: 9 a.m. at the northeast corner of Santa Fe Drive and Nardo Road (Location subject to change) \nWho: Speakers will include Senator Catherine S. Blakespear\, Vice Mayor Joy Lyndes\, Vista Deputy Mayor Corinna Contreras\, SDFA President Michelle Horsley\, EUSD Board Member Emily Andrade\, Families for Safe Streets\, safe infrastructure and active transportation advocates.  \n  \nWhy is it important to show up?  \n1) The project is a centerpiece of local and state efforts to create safer\, more walkable and bikeable streets in front of Encinitas’ biggest high school. \n2) The removal of protected biking and walking elements would set back the progress made towards making Encinitas a model safe streets city. \n3) Wasteful reconfiguration would eat up local general funds\, grant funding\, delay further improvements\, and undermine the city’s obligations to its residents\, youth\, and a safer community.
